Interesting Facts about the Obradoiro Facade

This image of the majestic Obradoiro Facade of the Cathedral of Santiago reveals more history than meets the eye. Here are some interesting details you may not have known:

- A "curtain-like" façade: Designed by Fernando de Casas Novoa between 1738 and 1750, this Baroque façade acts as a protective screen for the former Portico of Glory, shielding it from the elements. Furthermore, the large windows you see illuminate this iconic interior space.

- The towers and their symbolism: The two towers flanking the façade, known as the Torre das Campás (right) and the Torre da Carraca (left), reach 74 meters in height. They represent the pinnacle of Baroque art in Santiago de Compostela and are crowned by sculptures of saints and figures related to the Apostle Saint James.

- The Apostle in the center: If you look closely, on the upper level there is a niche housing an image of the Apostle Saint James dressed as a pilgrim, surrounded by angels and symbols of the Order of Saint James. Below, an urn commemorates the tomb where his remains were found.

Every detail of this façade tells a story. Let yourself be captivated by its beauty and symbolism! 🚖 Do you want to discover more?
